Friend of EduSport's 4th Annual fundraiser game hit new heights as they took on former favourites of Dukla Pumpherston at East Stirlingshire's Firs Park stadium!
On a warm may afternoon the teams took to the pitch
with high expectations from the new Friend Of EduSport management team
of Con McGeady and Graeme Furby. Their influence was obviously felt as
Friend Of EduSports Stuart Macarthur thundered an early ball towards
goal only to bounce brilliantly off Chick Youngs unassuming nose. Two
early efforts from the the younger of the Keir brothers screamed just
over the bar beyond the terrace and into the overgrown bush at the back
whilst elder Keir also had a well driven shot blocked by a resistant
Dukla defence. Mark Struthers was next in line to bring a terrific save
out from the Dukla goalkeeper, a cross from the left from Uhr was timed
brilliantly for a Struthers volley only to be denied by the brilliant
Mick Monaghan.
A large crowd congregated to support both teams on match day but it
was the centre half stalwart and still going strong, Joey Bregal that
the fans wanted to see in action and as ever, Big Joe isnt one to
dissapoint with another solid performance at the back. A strong and
experienced back four included Alan Keir Senior at right back who
chipped in a solid performance with son Junior at left back enjoying
his first game back for Friend Of EduSport after a lengthy lay off
through injury. The defence was completed by an expereinced campaigner
in John O Conner playing loves a solo centre back position.
In midfield there were strong performances from the Donnely brothers
although despite bad press in the run up to their fourth match there
was no diving on match day from Donnely senior.
As the match wore on Stevie McKee arrived to cap his
fourth appearance with a 50/50 against our own Stuart Macarthur. The
tussle was lost to 60 year Dukla man of the match ..... whilst
macarthur and Mckee enjoyed some afters with a bit of a manly slapping.
Soon after that, the introduction of 7ft tall Peggy Johnson unsettled
the away defence not only sporting a pair of SMALL shorts but also a
willing runner in the final third.
Ticket sales went into overdrive in the week leading up to the
match and early reports suggested the match was likely to overtake
previous records in raising money to support education and sport in
Zambia. The final total for our fourth annual Friend Of EduSport match
organised for the first time by Alan Keir Senior with support from wife
Marion saw us smash our previous record of £900 to raise
£1900.
Thanks must go to Dukla Pumpherston who provided very tough opposition
and an enterntaining match as well as all those who contributed to the
day including Jimmy Wilson of East Stirlingshire, referee Stephen
Finnie with assistance from Andrew Kowalczyk and Mr Andrew Dougan in

sponsors Quay 4 Steel, The Tone Zone, ApbDisplays, The Black Bull,
Grange Building Services, Mclaren Access Plant Hire, The Copper Top,
Alan Keir Ames Taping and Jimmy Kelly Vehicle Repair.
The moneys raised from this years match is in aid of raising funds for
the Sports Education Village. Thanks to all the players that took part
and once again provided an entertaining and enjoyable afternoon for
involved.
