More than 100million children worldwide drop out of school before completing just four years of primary school and two thirds of them girls (United Nations 1995). Over two thirds of the population in Zambia live on less than 55p a day. That’s 7.5 million people. Schooling is not free and can cost as much as £50 per year.
We support the work of EduSport and its Peer Leader programme by organising fund-raising events, managing sponsorship programmes and supporting and funding individual projects to contribute to the cost of education for young volunteers in Zambia.
Peer Leader Programme
The Edusport program uses the universal and proven medium of sport to develop positive human attributes such as endeavour, organisation, respect for rules, self discipline, team working, physical and mental health, social skills, and of course having fun. With our "Peer Leader" approach local children are given access to sporting facilities and equipment together with a volunteer peer leader who directs and develops the group. In return the peer leaders are sponsored through their further education. Enabling the leaders to reach their own academic potential.
Peer leaders provide an invaluable service in Zambia by using sports programmes and activities as a way to engage with young people and this also provides a useful platform for educating the young about HIV/AIDS and other health issues. Peer leaders are highly committed, enthusiastic and talented young people who volunteer to serve their community but who need help to inspire, direct and continue their work to empower. They need your support, please go to our sponsorship page and help for as little as £5 per month.
Philosophy
Friend Of EduSport believe that education and sport can play pivotal factors in Zambias development. With support accessing opportunities in school and further education we believe that young people can take on new challenges and stretch themselves to be the best they can be. Education and sport are essential factors in the development of any community whilst also enhancing the self esteem, knowledge and self confidence young volunteers can access. A philosophy that aims to switch young people on to leadership, sport and education based on the social foundation of making friends, sharing knowledge and having fun.
Empowerment Approach
Friend Of EduSport fosters empowerment initiatives in education and sport. Empowerment refers to a process of increasing personal, interpersonal or political power so that individuals can take action to improve their own lives and the lives of those around them.
