‘Dare 2 Dream’ Is Launched!!
Our sponsorship programme has now provided over 40 young peers with the opportunity to complete high school and that number is growing however, many of our peer leaders and young people in Zambia find difficulties on finding work as Zambia has a 75% unemployment rate. With so much investment being placed in peers during school Friend Of EduSport have launched our "Dare 2 Dream" scheme to provide dedicated young peer leaders of the communities involved with EduSport an opportunity in further education and apprenticeships.
Our Dare 2 Dream scheme has two strands, one being an ‘EduGrant’ which is given to the most deserving peer leaders to enter into further and higher education to keep them involved in the sport and education community work. The second strand is an ‘EduLoan’ whereby the recipient is given a small loan to start a business with the aim of being self sustainable within 2 years.
We gave our first EduGrant to Lyson Zulu to enable him to take up his University scholarship at Bath University in 2007. He has since completed year 1 of his foundation degree and returned to Zambia during the summer to continue his work with the EduSport Foundation. This year we have awarded two EduGrants with the generous support from friends who have contributed to making it possible for the 2 individuals to pursue their respective opportunities.
Firstly, Annie Musonda Namukanga has been offered a scholarship to Loughborough College to undertake a foundation degree in sport. We have been able to raise funds to support her costs with a £300 grant, in return for which she will undertake work with Friend of EduSport during her time in the UK. As Go Sisters coordinator in Zambia she has already agreed to work with Clare Farrow in coordinating the Go Sisters World Series 2009.
We aim to support some of the senior peer leaders who continue to do good work in their communities once they complete their schooling. In the community of Kalingalinga there are a number of peer leaders who we hope to assist with College fees in the next year. Our second EduGrant this year was awarded to Vincent Banda for his work in Kafue and continuing interest in development. Vincent has started a public administration diploma at the National Institute for Public Administration in Lusaka.
