Bingo Babes Beth McKenzíe, Moira Ure, Sheíla Robertson and Agnes Jarvie raise £10,000 a year |
They call the numbers to coin ín the cash - helping to raise thousands
of pounds for charity over the last 30 years. Moira Ure (73), Beth
Mckenzie (71), Agnes Jarvie (75), Sheíla Kobertson (67)- ог the Bingo
Babes as they are collectívely and affectionately known - have become
something of an institution in Grangemouth through their weekly prize
bingo nights..
Every Tuesday night at the Mahratta ín Bo'ness Road, eyes go down at
7.30 p.m. and the bank account of whatever that week's charity happens
to be goes up.
Moire said "Charities bring the prizes in and we run the bingo for them – we’ve been doing it ever since we can remember, every week, a1l year round.
"You can make around £300 a night depending on the crowd you get and how many prizes have been handed in. "We raised about £400 for Cancer Research a wee while ago."
Boost
In recent years the ladies have helped boost the funds of Grangennouth Air Cadets, Friends of Strathcarron Hospice, Grangemouth Community Care, a pipe band from South Queensferry and countless charities, churches and care homes.
"I think we raise about £10,000 a year for all sorts of causes.” said Beth.
"When we held an event in the Rangers Club we collected money for a girl’s hearing aid and a woman's wheelchair."
The ladies all live in Grangemouth and are well known around the town for their charitable exploits.
"People say hello when you’re out on the street," said Moira. "I don't know them, but I just say hello right back because they probably know me from the bingo nights."
The ladies agree the money- raising aspect is important, but so is the social side of their bingo nights.
"We get a night out from doing it and everyone is always really friendly," said Moíra.
The Bingo Babes are busy for the rest of the year with scheduled events including a fundraiser For Friends of Sport Zambia on August 25 and Grangemouth Communíty Care on September 15.
