Lawyers and law students from across the North enjoyed the sun yet
again at the fifth annual Legal Sports Day held by The College of Law
in York on Saturday 24 April, with a record 32 teams competing in
netball, football and rugby competitions.

College of Law, York rugby and football teams show off their smooth
waxed legs for charity.
College students past and present did battle with teams from York,
Leeds and Newcastle universities and law firms Addleshaw Goddard,
Eversheds, DLA Piper, Gordons, Hammonds, Harrowells, Olswang, Sintons
and Walker Morris.
The event also supported the ‘Friend of EduSport’ charity through
t-shirt sales and a sponsored leg wax by three of the College’s sports
teams. Friend of EduSport is a UK-based charity that helps talented but
poor, handicapped or orphaned African children by providing grants and
sponsorship that create opportunities for young people in education and
sport.
Charles Boyne, a student at The College of Law in York and mentor of
the football team met the founder of the charity while travelling and
pledged his support to raise funds for the Chawana project. The project
aims to raise £16k to purchase land and develop a school in this
undeveloped area of Zambia.
He said: “Friend of EduSport is the perfect charity link for our
Sports Day and what better way to enjoy a great day of sport and fun
while contributing to improving the lives of young people in Africa
through sport and education. All the teams and spectators were very
supportive and we managed to raise over £650 which will go towards the
project”.
Law firm Addleshaw Goddard won the ‘Rugby Cup’ while DLA Piper and
The College of Law York were joint winners of the ‘Rugby Plate’. The
‘Netball Cup’ was claimed by The College of Law, Manchester with DLA
Piper winning the ‘Netball Plate’.
Following a tense football final against a fellow College of Law
Alumni team, ‘College Old Boy’s Blonde, Red & Northern’ finally
walked away with the ‘Football Cup’. DLA Piper carried off the
‘Football Plate’.
