The Go Sisters World Series 2010 London leg took place on Saturday 15th May.
Tournament organiser Emily Reynolds tells us about the event.
It was an early start for some, as the day began with a Friend of Edusport meeting at Moberly Sports and Education centre. This produced an encouraging fusion of new ideas, updates of success stories and introductions of new faces. An inspirational start to a day which saw friends, family and strangers come together for a day of football and fun.
The first eager competitors arrived from midday, and the venue filled to capacity within the hour. Whilst some teams had returned to show their continuing support and build on performances from previous years, there was no shortage of new faces either, ensuring that the day was filled with high quality yet friendly competition.
The proceedings were introduced by the one and only Lyson Zulu, who opened the event with a message from Zambia. Fellow compatriot Annie Namukanga, one of the founders of Go Sisters, then wished all the competitors good luck and thanked them on behalf of the young girls in Zambia who will benefit from the money raised.
Fourteen teams were pitted against each other, in a tournament ably refereed in the spirit of fair play by Brian Hall and Nathanial Phillips, to whom we owe a great deal for their refereeing stamina! Both inside and out there was some great football, with a mixed bag of footballing talent ranging from women’s premiership players, through enthusiastic beginners roped in to make up numbers, to family members; a special mention goes to Alan and Marion Keir and Ian Campbell, parents of the charity founders who took to the field of play alongside their offspring.
Two great semi finals saw Seven Russians of Umatima against one half of The Likely Lads on the outdoor pitch, which went to extra time. The second team of Likely Lads took on the Trevelyan Tigers inside which was again a great battle.
The final saw a team that arrived as one, split in two. High level competition, which saw every decision challenged. The winning team pictured below scored in the last 3 minutes of play to win the competition.
The day itself was a culmination of the joint efforts of many. Thanks to all those who chipped in and helped out, especially to committed cake bakers Becky and Kirsty, raffle organiser Emma Nichol, and Morag Campbell at the registration table. A massive thank you also goes to all those who took part- keep an eye on the charity website and we look forward to seeing you all at next year’s event!
