Friend of EduSport support locally driven projects to ensure the long lasting sustainability of each effort but also to ensure that development comes from within. In 2009 we facilitated the delivery of 17,500 books as an outcome to a Friend of EduSport survey of local schools which highlighted the need for educational resources and access to a library. Having established 12 community/ school libraries our library project is continuing.
Our educational support is further complemented in our partnership with Chawama Sport and Educational Empowerment School, also home of Chawama EduSport. The vision for this school was born to allow young people from all backgrounds a chance to be educated regardless of capacity to pay school fees. This is a hugely inspiring project and we invite all friends and volunteers to learn more about our efforts and to get involved.
Our established outreach project for sport is a further development for our capacity building support of young sports leaders to deliver workshops and sporting opportunities to young people who would not otherwise have such access. Provisionally we aim to support the majority of developing peer leaders, an integral part of this outreach programme is the work done with specific target groups. To ensure our programmes are inclusive we are extending our work with under-served communities to provide opportunities in sport to young people with special needs and disabilities.
Link your school is an opportunity we hope will raise Friend of EduSport’s profile within the UK and provide partner schools in Zambia with an educational outlet to share their cultures and develop understanding of cultures different from their own. We believe that as ambassadors of education and sport we also have a responsibility to share our culture with Zambia and help Zambia share their culture with the UK. In doing so we hope to reduce an ‘us and them’ stigma and facilitate a forward thinking partnership that can recognise and complement each others strengths and weaknesses.
Finally a project that has laid a foundation for the development of sport in Kalingalinga is the Netball Court Project. At its core this projects provides a safe playing environment for the young athletes in this community and we hope to build on this success with further projects to support sport development in Zambia.
