. Although the traditional activity has been football, this can be very flexible and relate specifically to the interests of your school students to engage more young girls. We hope that through engaging in the World Series young people will be made aware of the issues faced by women and girls across the world, as well as being inspired themselves to engage in more activity
History of ‘Go Sisters World Series’
The Go Sisters World Series is inspired by EduSports Go Sisters event. A highly successful ‘girl empowerment through sport’ programme in Zambia organised by the EduSport Foundation, a leading sports NGO in Zambia and funded via the Department for International Development (DFID) via UK Sport. Go Sisters combines the importance of education and sport, creating a platform for life skills, leadership development and HIV/AIDS education for girls.
The Go Sisters programme identifies girls within schools and local communities in Zambia that demonstrate leader qualities. Each girl is trained at a Go Sisters Leadership Camp in sports skills, coaching, leadership skills and health issues. After six months of training and practical delivery of sport in the community the Go Sisters volunteer leaders train a new generation of identified sports leaders from their schools and communities to ensure the sustainability of the programme. In return for their efforts and volunteering the Go Sisters volunteers are assisted with their school fees to provide additional support to compliment their efforts to complete their schooling. Go Sisters youth leaders will then work as sport leaders and mentors for their school and community sports programmes.
The Birth of ‘Go Sisters World Series’
With the rain pouring heavily the inaugural Go Sisters World Series was launched by Fiona Campbell and Clare Farrow in Barnet, North London, on 9th of August 2008. Two teams competed with fair play and friendship at the heart of the event. From 22 players in 2008 the event engaged over 100 people in 2009 and in 2010 Emily Reynolds came on board to reach over 140 people and raise much needed funds to support sport and education for girl empowerment around the world. Since May 2010 the Friend Of EduSport team has been working hard to produce an even bigger event in the years to come ensuring educate more, empower many and inspire everyone to get active for development. Starting in January 2011 Go Sisters World Series will engage even more woman and girls across the world to take part in our special event to celebrate woman, raise funds for education and inspire through sport.
