Stan the Man

This is Stan Mponje - the latest community peer leader to receive his college fees through the Friend of EduSport s Dare 2 Dream programme. Elizabeth Johnson, student at University of St Andrews, tells us about this exceptional young man.

"I met Stan Mponje in a rural village in Liteta, Zambia. I was on my rural placement as part of my work for the charity Zambia IDEALS, which seeks to deliver sports, leadership and health awareness sessions to children in Zambia.

I immediately liked Stan, I think it was because he was very welcoming, very kind and fun. Living in the rural village seemed like a daunting idea but Stan and the rest of the Liteta community made it the one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences I have ever had.

Stan is an amazing peer leader. He came to many of the rural sports sessions with us and was so good at finding the missing part of our sessions and filling; getting the kids excited about whatever we were doing and trying to learn as much as he could from us (though I think in the end he taught me much more than I could ever teach him).

For example, at one of the rural schools we visited; I was leading a football session with the 7-14 year olds, one of my partners was leading a running session for the older boys and the other partner was teaching netball to the girls. However, this left the little kids with nothing to do; Stan jumped right in and helped us make the experience meaningful for all the kids. I remember looking up at one point to see Stan slowly jogging at the far end of the pitch with a trail little kids following merrily behind him, I do not know what game he was playing with them but they were obviously enjoying themselves.

Stan brings an such a great attitude to everything he does and he makes his community a better place through his kindness and sincerity. He does not have the resources to attend college but he deserves to go and the skills that he learns will be put right back into his local community."

We look forward to seeing Stan continue his great work in Liteta!

Stan works with Sport in Action and we are delighted to continue our partnership with SIA to empower more isnpiring young people to reach their potential.
